Plastic Free July: One Step at a Time

Plastic Free July: One Step at a Time

Alyssa Eimbrodt

Every July, we get a few customers walking in looking a bit overwhelmed. They've watched a documentary, or scrolled past one too many confronting stats about plastic in our oceans, and they've decided this is the month they fix everything. Bin bags out, cupboards emptied, a mission to become a completely plastic-free household by August 1.

We get the instinct. We've felt it too. But here's what we've learned running this shop: that approach almost never sticks.

You don't need to throw everything out

If you've got plastic containers, cling wrap, or products in your pantry right now, that's okay. Chucking out perfectly usable things to replace them with "better" versions isn't actually the sustainable choice. It just creates more waste, plus a pile of guilt that makes the whole thing feel impossible.

Plastic Free July isn't about a perfect household. It's about starting somewhere and building from there. Real, lasting change comes from one habit at a time, not a dramatic reset that burns out by week two.

Start with one thing

This is the bit we talk about with customers all the time. Pick one product you go through often. Maybe it's dish soap. Maybe it's shampoo. Maybe it's the cling wrap you reach for every school lunch. Swap just that one thing for a refill or a plastic-free alternative, and let it become a habit before you think about the next swap.

That's genuinely how change sticks. Not by overhauling everything at once, but by making one small shift feel normal, then adding the next one when you're ready.

Where Go For Zero comes in

If you're looking for a place to start, our Go For Zero range is a good one to browse. It's a local line, with everyday plastic-free living in mind, so the swaps are practical rather than aspirational. Things like reusable muffin pansbaking mats, and refillable options that slot into your normal routine without asking you to change how you live.

Pair that with our bulk buying and refill stations in-store, and you've got a few easy entry points for the month. Bring your own jar, fill it with pantry staples, and skip the packaging altogether. Small stuff, but it adds up.

Progress, not perfection

We say this a lot because we believe it: every small swap matters. Refilling instead of rebuying. Choosing one less-packaged option this week. None of it needs to be perfect to count.

So this Plastic Free July, we're not asking you to overhaul your home. We're asking you to pick one thing. See how it feels. Let it become a habit. That's how real, lasting change happens, and it's something we're proud to help our Sunshine Coast community work towards, one jar at a time.

Come say hi in-store if you want a hand figuring out where to start. We love talking through this stuff with our customers, no judgement, just genuine chat about what actually works for your household.
